Biography

Wopke Hoekstra is the European Commissioner for Climate, Net Zero and Clean Growth since 1 December. He leads the European Union's efforts to tackle the climate crisis. He is also responsible for Taxation. He served in the first von der Leyen Commission as Commissioner for Climate Action from October 2023 to end of November 2024. 

From 2011 to 2017, Wopke Hoekstra was a Member of the Dutch Senate. In October 2017, he became the Minister of Finance. From January 2022, he served concurrently as Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs. Prior to becoming a Minister, he was a partner at McKinsey & Company in their Amsterdam office. Hoekstra was also chairman of the supervisory board of the National Maritime Museum in Amsterdam and ambassador for the Prinses Maxima Centrum for paediatric oncology.

Born in 1975, Hoekstra studied law at Leiden University, from which he graduated in 2001. He also studied law at LUISS in Rome, before he obtained an MBA degree at INSEAD in 2005.
