Question

Could you give a precise definition of the term ‘underwriting risk’ in S.21.03?

Background of the question

For the line of business motor vehicle liability we observe that the number of insured vehicles that insurers report in S.27.01.01.08 Man–made catastrophe risk — Motor Vehicle Liability  (C0520/R2100 + C0520/R2100) is always slightly different from the number of underwriting risks reported in S.21.03 (C0040/R0220). What are the reasons that these two numbers can differ?

EIOPA answer

The focus of the two templates is different: while S.21.03 is a summary of Underwriting risks by sum insured for direct business only and limited to non-life and health non-similar to life, S.27.01 gives an indication of the drivers that impact the cat-risk, and therefore SCR calculation divided by LoB and inclusive of both non life and health. Given the above, the slight difference in the numbers reported between the two templates with respect to underwriting risks is not linked to the definition but rather to the different consideration of “Health" in the counting for the two templates.
