The European Insurance and Occupational Pensions Authority (EIOPA) and the European Central Bank (ECB) are organising a Workshop on Policy options to reduce the climate insurance protection gap.
The aim of the event is to discuss policy options that were published in the Discussion Paper on 24 April.
The overall goal is to contribute to and solicit the debate around possible solutions to tackle the climate insurance protection gap, incentivise risk mitigation and adaptation, and lower the share of economic losses from major disasters borne by the public sector. In particular, the Discussion Paper suggests a ladder approach that builds on the existing frameworks of private (re)insurance, catastrophe bonds and national public sector interventions, including public-private partnerships. It also discusses the possible case for more concerted and forward-looking policy coordination and intervention at the national and EU level, particularly in relation to severe climate-related disasters.
